CLN3 is a gene that encodes the protein Battenin. Mutations in this gene can result in a rare, terminal disease known as Batten disease. The precise function of Battenin is not known, but it is known to normally localize to the lysosome (a compartment in the cell where degradation occurs). In Batten disease, it has been found to localize to the ER or golgi apparatus (where proteins are made, modified, and packaged).
